Features of the IELTS exam 2024 and its format

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is an international system for assessing the knowledge of the English language in people for whom it is not native. IELTS certificates are recognized in more than 140 countries around the world, and now a day all foreign country is the most demanded language proficiency test ( IELTS). In all foreign country, you will need IELTS if you plan to study for a degree program, look for a job or apply for residency.

IELTS is supervised by three international organizations:

  • Cambridge ESOL Examinations
  • British Council
  • IDP: IELTS Australia.

IELTS assesses a student’s four basic language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking. Each skill is rated on a 9-point scale (from 0 (Did not attempt the test) to (9 – Expert User)). Points awarded are rounded to the nearest whole number or 1/2 of a number. The certificate records both the total score received by the students and the scores for each of the four modules (each section).

Difference between IELTS General and IELTS Academic

The IELTS exam has two modules – General Training (general module) and Academic Training (academic module). Very often, students ask the question – which of the IELTS modules is easier to pass? Which one is better to choose? And here it is necessary to clarify right away – the General module is simpler, but students rarely have the opportunity to choose which module to take. The choice of a module in the overwhelming majority of cases depends on the purpose of obtaining an IELTS certificate.

If you plan to enroll in educational institutions in an English-speaking country, then in almost 100% of cases you will need an academic module (IELTS Academic). If your goal is employment or immigration, then in most cases the general module, IELTS General, will suit you. One way or another, if IELTS is required for you to be submitted to a specific institution, it is always better to specify which module and what score is needed.

What is the difference between the General and Academic modules?

The two sections, Listening and Speaking, are the same for both modules. During Listening, all candidates, regardless of which module they are taking, listen to the same recording. Speaking is a one-on-one interview of a candidate with an examiner and is also the same for everyone.

The modules are distinguished by two sections – Reading and Writing.

The Reading section of the Academic module includes three rather large academic-style texts. These can be popular science articles, excerpts from scientific journals, textbooks, etc. – in other words, texts rich in complex vocabulary and grammar. Topics are usually related to different areas of science: biology, sociology, psychology and others. This orientation of the tasks of the academic module is due to the fact that the student is to study in English, so he must be able not only to read and understand complex texts, but also to navigate in them, to find the necessary information in a limited time.

The Reading section of the General module includes 4 short texts of everyday topics. This can be, for example, advertisements, a list of job responsibilities in the office, texts about some social problems, etc. The purpose of this section is to test whether the candidate living in an English speaking country can understand texts on everyday topics.

In the Writing section of the Academic module, you will be asked to write a description for a table, graph, diagram, diagram, etc. (analyze data, identify patterns, trends), as well as write an essay on an academic topic. For example, on the topic of global warming. The Writing section of the General module includes writing a letter in a formal or informal style (for example, to a boss or a friend) and an essay on a daily topic, such as the dangers and benefits of mobile phones. Thus, the difference between the Writing sections in the Academic and General modules also lies precisely in the different levels of “academic” topics and assignments.

In addition to IELTS Academic and IELTS General, there is another version of the IELTS exam – IELTS UKVI (United Kingdom Visa and Immigration). However, this test is only accepted in the UK, so we will not dwell on it in detail.

Where to take IELTS and how much does the exam cost?

There are more than 1600 IELTS centers in the world, located in more than 140 countries.

You can take IELTS Academic 48 times a year, IELTS General – 24 times a year. It is recommended to sign up for the exam in advance as there is a high demand for the exam, especially in all foreign country.

Paper and computer versions of the IELTS exam 2024

There are two formats for taking IELTS – standard on paper (paper-based) and computer-based (computer-based). The second format has appeared relatively recently, so it is not yet carried out by all testing centers. Meanwhile, it has a number of advantages, namely:

Large selection of dates for passing the exam.

  • Possibility to pass all 4 parts of the exam in one day.
  • Faster receipt of exam results (5-7 days as opposed to 13 days for the paper version).
  • For the Listening part: the ability to use an individual headset, the ability to adjust the sound volume.
  • For the Reading part: the ability to select text and make notes directly in the text, the ability to see the text and questions to it on the screen at the same time.
  • For the Writing part: the presence of a written word counter, the ability to easily correct mistakes, delete / edit text.

The results of the computer version of the IELTS exam 2024 are completely equivalent to the results of the paper version.

Appeals

There are times when a student categorically disagrees with the marks received on the exam, and is sure that they are unfounded. In this case, he has the right to appeal.

An appeal can be made within 6 weeks from the date of the exam. The application can be submitted both for the revision of the results of one of the parts, and for the entire exam. The term of consideration is from 2 to 21 days. The appeal is paid, in Russia at the time of this writing, its cost is 8700 rubles and does not depend on the number of parts that require revision.

If, according to the results of the check, the student’s score increases in at least one of the sections, the appeal is considered satisfied. In this case, the student is refunded the cost of the appeal. If, according to the results of the check, the score remains the same or decreases, the appeal fee is not refundable. You can only file an appeal once and the result will be final. For the period of consideration of the appeal, the IELTS certificate is considered invalid.

How to prepare for the IELTS exam

You can prepare for the IELTS exam both independently and with a teacher or at a language school. There are now a large number of useful resources for self-study on the Internet, including the official website of the IELTS test , where you can find useful preparation materials and trial assignments.

Language schools in all foreign country

IELTS preparation courses are available in all language schools which we cooperate. Unlike general English courses, where you can enroll with any language level, to study in IELTS preparation courses, a student must have a certain level of language – as a rule, not lower than Intermediate. The level is determined by the results of testing on the first day of study. If your level does not reach the required level, you will be offered to study a general English program for some time before the start of the IELTS course.

Before going to study in all foreign country, you will need to obtain a visa – a visitor visa if your study period will not exceed 12 weeks, and a student visa if the period is more than 12 weeks. A student visa gives you the opportunity to get the right for a part-time job.

Of course, studying at a language school in all foreign country can be considered an almost ideal option for improving the language, since in addition to studying at school, you can completely immerse yourself in the language environment.
