SAT Exam 2024 : Exams for admission to US universities and colleges

A single standardized exam that must be passed by school graduates to obtain a certificate of maturity and admission to US universities. Examinations are held throughout the country, all students perform the same type of tasks, and uniform methods for assessing the quality of work are used to assess the results. After passing the exam, all participants are issued certificates of performance (often called certificates), which indicate the scores received. However, both the form and the content of these exams vary significantly from country to country. For this reason, direct (without additional requirements) enrollment of students from one country to universities in another country is not always possible. So, for example, graduates of schools in Great Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand do not need to pass any exams or tests to enroll in American colleges, graduates of Western European countries need to prove their knowledge of English, and graduates of schools in India, Russia, China and many others must pass both a language test and an exam for the admissions committee (SAT Exam 2024). However, it is sometimes easier for Western European schoolchildren to pass the SAT or ACT than to satisfy the admissions committee with the average score received in their country, especially since this is not prohibited.

A distinctive feature of the United States, or rather the requirements for admission of foreigners in this country, is the simplicity of such rules: foreigners do not need to take a preparatory course (in the UK it is called Foundation), and you can take tests confirming their ability to study in American colleges in almost any country in the world , for this it is not at all necessary to go to the USA. Although, of course, to pass it at a high level, it is still better to go.

For SAT Exam 2024 and ACT Exam 2024:

  • No age requirements
  • There are no restrictions on the number of attempts (exams can be taken as many times as you like)
  • Exams are held 7 (SAT) or 6 (ACT) times a year
  • There are examination centers in most countries of the world

SAT Exam I

The Reasoning Test (Scholastic Aptitude Test and Scholastic Assessment Test) is an academic assessment test – a standardized test for admission to US colleges. Developed and operated by the non-profit College Board, the SAT was first held in 1901 and has changed its name and scoring system more than once since.

The SAT exam is designed to assess the applicant’s basic mathematical, verbal and analytical skills. The SAT is compulsory for both American applicants and applicants from other countries (the latter, together with the SAT, take the TOEFL test).

Attention! Do not confuse the SAT with the SSAT for secondary school applicants.

The SAT Exam 2024 is valid for 5 years.

Testing lasts 3 hours without essays and about four hours with essays. The examinee must choose the correct answer from the four proposed options. The new SAT does not include vocabulary items in the Reading section and does not reduce the score for incorrect answers. In general, with the introduction of the new format, SAT has become closer to ACT.

SAT Exam 2024 Test Structure

The new SAT consists of 2 language sections, 2 math sections and an additional essay writing section:

Number of questions

Allotted time, minutes

READING TEST (text analysis section)5265
WRITING AND LANGUAGE TEST
(written language section)
4435
MATH TEST – NO CALCULATOR
(math section – no calculator)
twenty25
MATH TEST – CALCULATOR
(math section – with calculator)
3855
ESSAY
(composition)
1 topic50

To successfully pass the math section, you need a good calculator: not only accuracy is important, but also the speed of calculations. You cannot use a computer, phone or tablet. SAT Math assignments include arithmetic examples, algebra and geometry problems, and questions about the basics of probability and statistics.

From a mathematical point of view, the basic SAT is already a serious problem for many:

  • Firstly, you need to get used to the mathematical style of the English language, to specific terminology. It often happens that a person who is fluent in English does not understand what is required of him in a given task.
  • Secondly, many of the test tasks relate to topics that school children in the country wide Federation are almost unfamiliar with – combinatorics, probability theory, statistics and data analysis.

SAT Exam 2024 Evaluation of results

2005 to 2016 SAT scores ranged from 600 to 2400 points, making up the sum of 3 tests (mathematics, text analysis and grammar), each of which could respectively give up to 800 points. Since March 2016, the new SAT format is adopted, but the results of the old one are valid.

Since 2016, the rating scale has changed: the number of correct answers determines the result in the language and mathematical sections in the range from 200 to 800. The total result for the SAT test is from 400 to 1600 points. Questions are divided into easy, medium and difficult. As a rule, simple questions are located closer to the beginning, and difficult questions are located towards the end of the section. Both simple and difficult tasks give the same number of points.

When passing the exam, only correct answers are taken into account. No points will be deducted for incorrect answers or unanswered questions. Therefore, you need to try to answer every question. If you don’t know the answer, try to guess.

Essays are not a required part of the SAT, but many universities require essay scores. 50 minutes are allocated for writing an essay. When evaluating an essay, it is taken into account:

  • understanding the source
  • critical analysis
  • essay writing technique

The result is assessed separately on a scale from 2 to 8 points in each of these 3 areas.

For each of the tests, regardless of the chosen discipline, you can get from 200 to 800 points. They are typed by answering questions, which in the test can be from 50 to 95. At the same time, do it in an hour. As a result, there is little time left for each question, and this can really become a problem.

The key to successfully passing SAT Subject Tests is knowledge of the specific terminology of the subject, mastery of basic formulas and the ability to solve standard problems. The first is necessary to correctly understand the question. As for the rest of the requirements, due to the limited time for completing tasks, the solution of tasks must be brought to automatism. However, the main disadvantage of SAT II is at the same time an advantage: there will be no super-difficult tasks.

Most often, the applicant independently chooses which subjects he will take, however, some American universities require the results of SAT Subject tests in certain disciplines. Therefore, before you apply for the delivery of that other subject, you need to make sure whether this is necessary for admission to the desired specialty. If you plan to enter the top 50 universities, you will most likely have to pass at least 2 SAT Subject Tests.

The exam lasts one hour. The literature exam includes 60 multiple choice questions. Students should read passages from different books and answer questions. The mathematics exam differs in level of difficulty: you can choose Level 1 or Level 1 depending on the requirements of the university. The second level is more difficult. On the mathematics exam, you need to answer 50 questions in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics in an hour. The physics exam includes 75 assignments, the biology exam – 80 assignments, and the chemistry exam – 85 assignments. The history exam has 95 questions to be answered. SAT Subject Test contains 50 – 80 tasks, each of which offers to choose only one correct answer out of 5 options.

Standardized test scores are important, but not the only criterion for deciding whether to enroll in colleges and universities. In addition to exam results, academic performance and achievements, student motivation, non-academic activities (for example, participation in socially significant projects), hobbies and interests, hobbies are taken into account.
